‘AKO Strikes Back’, the under 18s November Racing Series, came to a closely fought conclusion on Sunday 25th with the final three races in the afternoon. The series attracted 39 competitors sailing 28 boats, which easily beat numbers achieved for Sunday Club Racing (with twice as many on day 2!).
The series has seen a variety of conditions, from postponements for strong winds and race cancellations due to no wind. Despite this, eight races were completed over three out of the four November Sunday afternoons, with five races to count overall.
Well done to everybody who sailed in the series with some testing conditions and some tough competition.
Congratulations go to Buzz and Poppy Gilks, who secured the series win with four race wins and a second place in their Feva, not needing to race on the last day. Second place was also taken by an RS Feva from St Paul’s School, sailed consistently well by Ben Waha and Ian Emerson, taking two race wins and two second places through the series. In third place overall and first Topper was Rosie Johnson, only three points behind also counting a race win.
Congratulations also go to Nikolas Daultry Ball for being the only competitor to finish every race in the series, and also achieving a race win, scoring 7th overall. We also saw a great effort from our youngest competitor in the series, Coco Barrett, who took 8th overall with some consistent sailing for a light sailor in strong winds.
The next AKO event will be the QM Youth Winter Championships on 9th December. There will be three average lap handicap races back to back starting at 10:45. Come to the race briefing at 9:45 to get the details of the course and sailing area. The entry fee is £10/singlehander or £15 doublehander, and is included in the price paid for the QM organised Topper/Laser training day on Saturday 8th.
