Sailability
Queen Mary Sailability's role is to encourage and support people with disabilities to take up the sport of sailing and facilitate their integration into the boating community. Staffed by volunteers, the group meets every Thursday, with some sailing on Friday mornings for schools, and caters for a wide variety of disabled, from those having their first taster to paralympic competitors. Some come with schools or other groups whilst others come individually. New for the 2008 season will be a Saturday morning race training session in Challenger trimarans for selected young disabled sailors.
Boats
The section has a good select of boats including wheel-steered Yeoman keelboats, Devon Luggers, one-man 2.4m paralympic keelboats, Access dinghies, and Challenger trimarans. There are boat hoists to launch the boats and ramps to a large stable pontoon on our more sheltered side. A hoist is available on the pontoon to enable sailors with physical disabilities to get into boats.
Events
The section hosts a variety of events from the RYA National Disabled Championships to our own Special Olympic Regatta, Blind Sailing International events and Sailability entries within other events such as the Queen Mary Bloody Mary.
Sponsorship
Our group is indebted to the National Lottery fund for original conversion work as well as Awards for All, Snow & Rock, Thames Water plc, Middlesex Freemasons and many more for their generous donations. We have an excellent relationship with the local Rotary Clubs of Spelthorne who have assisted the QM Sailability with donations and volunteers.
