Sports Award for RYA Regional Chairman
RYA Regional Chairman Alan Woolford was awarded the Disability Sports Award at the 2013 Spelthorne Sports Awards in a presentation ceremony at The Orangery at Shepperton Studios on 17 October 2013.
Awards were presented to local players, coaches and volunteers to reward them for their achievements, effort and dedication to sport in Spelthorne, and guests enjoyed hearing from guest speaker and GB hockey player Paddy Smith.
The Disability Sports Award was in recognition for Alan’s hard work and enthusiasm over many years for disabled sailing. Another notable recent winner of the award was London 2012 Paralympic bronze medalist and five times Skud 18 World Champion Alexandra Rickham, who developed her sailing skills at Queen Mary Sailing Club (QMSC) Sailability.
Alan is the head of the QMSC Sailability Group, which focuses its activities on special needs schools, adult special needs groups such as the MS Society, and individual sailors. RYA Sailability is the leading UK charity for disabled sailing and is the official charity of the RYA.
Alan is involved in fund raising and acquiring boats, recruiting helpers, managing sailing sessions, ensuring helpers have or obtain suitable instructing, first aid and safety boat qualifications and generally ensuring the group maintains the safety and operational standards required by the RYA and QMSC.
Apart from his Sailability involvement, Alan also has a long history of supporting and developing sailing as a whole, work which he continues today in his role as Chairman of the RYA Thames Valley and London region.
The annual awards event was coordinated by the Spelthorne Sports Council and Spelthorne Borough Council and was supported by Active Surrey and Shepperton Studios
Mary West, Sport and Active Lifestyle Officer at Spelthorne Borough Council, said: “The awards are a fantastic celebration of sporting success in the borough. It makes us very proud to reward local players, coaches and volunteers for their achievements, effort and dedication to sport in Spelthorne.”
