It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of the death of Club member Dan Wiggins. On Wednesday evening, 2 September, Dan was spotted in the water beside his upright Laser shortly before Club racing. QM safety staff and members promptly recovered him from the water and performed CPR until relieved by emergency medical staff who accompanied him to hospital where he remained in intensive care until his death earlier today. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to Dan's wife and his family at this sad time.
I must tell you how proud I am of the way QMSC staff performed under pressure and in distressing circumstances. They deserve great praise for their professionalism and dedication which was also praised by the emergency services.
Dan was a well-known and popular presence at the Club. A regular in the Laser fleet and on the Committee Boat, he had also previously been a valued and well-respected instructor at QMSC. In recognition of Dan's special place in the Club, there will be a minute's silence just before the first race tomorrow morning, Sunday 6 September. This will be signalled by three sound signals at the start and end of the period.
Once funeral arrangements are known, I will let you know and before then there will be a card at the Club which anyone wishing to send a message to Dan’s family can sign.

Dear Club Members
Many of you will know from my previous email of the sad death of Dan Wiggins last week after sailing at the Club.
The Memorial Service for Dan is being held next Tuesday. In order to allow staff, who worked closely with him, to attend, we have decided to close the Club for the afternoon of Tuesday 15 September 2015, from 12.30pm.
I am sure many of you will wish to pass on your condolences to Dan’s family: a card will be available at the office over this weekend, for anyone who wishes to sign it, and we have more information about the Memorial Service for anyone who wishes to join us there. Please telephone or call in at the Club for more details.
