Congratulations to 16 year old Issy Mitchell who has won the Thames Valley Regional title of RYA Young Sailor of the Year. Nominated by club member James George as follows:
"Isobel started sailing the RS400 with myself James George in September 2010 joining from the QMSC youth sailing scheme. Showing an exceptional aptitude to learn quickly how to maximize every potential efficiency in making the boat faster.
Isobel has gone on to win the QMSC Autumn, Winter, Frostbite, Spring and Summer series competing most Sundays against highly skilled and experienced crews in one of the largest 400 club fleets in the country. From a results point of view Isobel has had scored 34 first places from 47 qualifying races. this is more than any other RS400 sailor including myself at QMSC. The highlight is the Winter Series scoring first place in every single race.
Isobel has gone on to race on the RS400 circuit at the major venues including Rutland and the National Sailing Academy once again producing results rarely outside the Top 5 in a fleet which is renowned for ex Olympic hopefuls such as Hugh and Sally Styles, Mike Simms and Nick Craig.
Isobel also competed at Cowes week spinnaker trimming an SB3 finishing 11th from 37 boats as well as the highlight of 2011 winning a race at the National Championships for the RS400's beating 83 other boats to become one of only 2 boats to beat the reigning champion Nick Craig still aged only 15.
Having only started sailing two and a half years ago, Isobel has had a fast and furious start to sailing taking large and small fleets on lakes, rivers and sea by storm in weather conditions often exceeding 30 knots. QMSC have identified Isobel as a rising talent and as well as having employed Isobel in her spare time to work at the club providing rescue cover have also trained Isobel to become a Sailing Instuctor.
I personally believe that Isobel's dedication to the sport has been second to none and it is her mature attitude to sailing well beyond her years which has given Isobel the platform to achieve so much in such a short space of time. Most important all of this has been achieved at the age of 15 in a Year when Isobel also gained 6 A*, 5 A's and 2B's GCSE's"
Well done indeed from everyone at QM
