Battle of the Fleets

ONLY £250 per boat

What is the Battle of the Fleets?

The Battle of the Fleets is an annual event giving members of QMSC the opportunity to experience fleet racing in J80 keelboats. Reviewing its previous success, the event will be run all day and aims to complete 10 back-to-back 1-2 lap races.

Who is Eligible?

In previous years we have had boats comprised from the Laser and RS400 fleets, Saturday Club, Youth Group Parents and Select Members. However, we are always looking for more competitors!! We require at least one crew member over 18 years old who has relevant keelboat/yachting experience, and or have sufficient dinghy sailing experience. There is no minimum age on crew, however all crew must be an appropriate size to ably manage the boat in up to 20 knots of wind and again have relevant sailing experience. All crew members must be approved by Greg Dawson before competing.

How do I book my team onto the event?

First you need to register your interest with Greg Dawson (details below). It is a good idea to identify all 4/5 members of your team before contacting Greg. If you are an individual not part of a team, register your interest and Greg will do his best to find you a boat for the event. If you are eligible to participate your team can then schedule a training session from the dates available and a boat will be allocated to you for the event. From there you will be directed to pay via the office.

How can I pay for my team?

You can pay in the office or over the phone. We accept payments via cash, cheques, debit and credit cards.

What training dates are available?

Included within the £250 fee is 1 free 3 hour training session. Below are the available dates for weekend training sessions. We are offering x2 3 hour training sessions on any given date. Morning sessions from 9.30am-12.30pm and an afternoon session from 1.30pm-4.30pm. We can facilitate additional sessions on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you are unable to attend any of these dates please contact Greg.

Do you need a training session and do you need an instructor onboard?

The primary purpose of the training session before the event is to familiarise yourself with the boat. Not only is this a useful time to familiarise yourself with the layout, size and controls of the J’s, but also a fantastic opportunity to hone your skills within the boat, possibly giving your team the edge throughout the competition. In addition this session is paid for within your £250, waste not want not!

Some of you may also be asking the question “do we really need an instructor for our training session?” Ultimately this is up to the discretion of Greg Dawson. Below is a guideline to the minimum experience the QM would require for you to independently train.

  • At least 2 crew members have previous experience sailing keelboats/yachts or sufficient dinghy sailing experience.
  • At least 2 crew members are 18 years old +.
  • All crew members have listened to an in-house boat safety briefing.

A final note to remember is that the event will be run using symmetric spinnakers*. For some of you this maybe a completely new experience. For others this may be the first time flying a symmetric spinnaker on this scale. Hence having an experienced pair of hands onboard might not be a bad thing!

*the use of spinnakers is weather dependent.
