Queen Mary Sailing Club & Sailsports is located on a 700 acre expanse of open water raised high above the surrounding landscape. As such it is a perfect location for learning, and improving upon, powerboating techniques.
Courses are delivered in a range of powerboats from tiller-steer 9.9HP to 50HP RIBs.
Our RYA qualified instructors are passionate about the promotion of safe powerboat driving practice and will take candidates through RYA Powerboat Level 2 and RYA Safety Boat qualifications in a structured, informative and enjoyable way.
Courses run over 2 days and are mainly scheduled at weekends. However individual courses can be tailored for small groups - just give us a call to discuss your requirements

Beyond our courses it may be possible to gain further experience by speaking to the Sailing Manager about powerboat driving opportunities as a volunteer Safety Crew for racing events at Queen Mary Sailing Club.
Whilst participating in a RYA Powerboat Level 2 course it is recommended that you wear:
- On colder Spring, Autumn & Winter days: warm, fleecy clothes with a waterproof jacket and trousers and wellington boots, wetsuit boots or similar. QM has limited numbers of splash-proof jackets and trousers which may be used (powerboat courses are given priority on the use of these garments). Whilst providing good wind and shower protection, however, they are not fully waterproof and offer no warmth. Warm hats and gloves are strongly advised
- On warmer Summer days: tee-shirt, shorts or track-suit trousers, wind-proof splash-top and sandals/old trainers should suffice
Whilst participating in a RYA Safety Boat course it is likely that you will get wet (either in the powerboat, entering the water or moving dinghies and/or windsurfers into position.) Entering the water will, however, be kept to a minimum. Suitable gear must be worn such as drysuits or wetsuits with waterproofs on top. Hats, gloves and suitable footwear should be worn. QM has wetsuits and a limited number of splashproof jackets and trousers available.
For both courses a buoyancy aid is provided and must be worn at all times afloat. Gloves, hat, sunglasses, suncream etc. may be useful depending on the weather and the time of year.
