Queen Mary Club Member nominated for prestigious award

Queen Mary Sailing Club member Alexandra Rickham has been nominated for the prestigious International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award.

Launched in 1994, the award is the pinnacle a sailor can reach in recognition of his or her outstanding achievements by the world of sailing. The awards are presented every November to one male and one female sailor, and other nominees include Olympic sailor Ben Ainslie and record breaking Round The World Yachtswoman Dee Caffari.

Skandia Team GBR member Alexandra sails the two-person SKUD18 keelboat, along with her crew Niki Birrell.

In December 2010 Alexandra claimed the gold medal at the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup Series Sail Melbourne regatta after a string of impressive performances. A second gold medal of the World Cup circuit came in Hyères at the Semaine Olympique Française, followed by two silvers from the US SAILING Rolex Miami OCR and Skandia Sail for Gold in Weymouth.

With a second consecutive World Cup title and an exceptional third consecutive International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) World title, Alexandra’s determination to succeed has lead to her and Niki being selected to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Paralympics.
