Schools
Queen Mary offer local schools an opportunity to add sailing and windsurfing to their sports curriculum.
Queen Mary provide sailing and windsurfing sessions for schools, either as part of their school curriculum or outside of school in the form of clubs. We work closely with the Bishop Wand School Sports Partnership and give the opportunity to hundreds of youngsters to get involved.
Ashford Church of England school has been coming to us for the past six years and give their children not just the opportunity to experience a new sport but also to progress and gain nationally recognised qualifications, With some of the youngsters gaining their RYA stage 3 before moving onto secondary school. Sessions take part after school during term time. As of 2010, we have also introduced windsurfing to the group which has proved extremely popular.
Both sailing and windsurfing sessions allow people to gain their RYA qualifications, Once they are Sailing stage 3 or windsurfing stage 2, they can join the Queen Mary youth group / Team 15 which concentrates on developing racing skills.
During 2009 and 2010, We ran a sports unlimited Project with Clarendons school and St Ignatius school. This gave 24 students from each school the chance to try sailing for 10 weeks. Out of St Ignatius school, a group of 7 youngsters became members of the club themselves and continued their training, and two of them have recently entered a local competition in Feva dinghies, coming 4th overall.
We can cater for any children over the age of 8 and can either do one taster sessions or ongoing learn to sail courses. To discuss the options that your school have, please contact Tim Anderton 01784 248881 or tim.anderton@queenmary.org.uk
