Thames Valley Team Racing Challenge report

On Saturday 2nd July 2011, 6 members of the Youth squad represented QM in a Thames Valley Team Racing challenge at Maidenhead Sailing Club. This event was designed for less experienced sailors, so we put out a team from the 'junior branch' of the Youth Squad. The team comprised of: Lucy G, Lucy S, Buzz, Poppy, George and Patrick.

We've all done lots of fleet racing but, for most of us, team racing in Fevas is a whole new experience. Some might say that Lucy and Patrick have always done match racing against each other (every time they get on the water in fact!) and so it was fun to be on the same side for once!

Unfortunately the winds were very, very light. Tim and Trevor were looking very worried at the thought of having to entertain us all on dry land, but luckily the wind got up juuuuuust enough for us to get out on the water. In our races we managed 2 wins out of 4, with one of the losses being against the eventual winners. Buzz & Poppy are now our Feva experts; no-one messes with the 2 Lucy's (would you?); and Patrick & George were having a ball trying to take out the entire opposition with their cunning mark traps!

Overall we got 6th place out of the 12 teams, and we were really pleased with that result. Well done team QM!! Even more important, everyone had loads of fun, and we made lots of new friends with other young sailors from the other clubs. Hopefully we'll see them around at other events, and maybe at QM one day.
