Welcome to Youth Sailing 2017
There are some new things and exciting changes happening in 2017 and let’s start with the biggest change of them all, the club will take leadership of the co-ordination and delivery of youth group.
This change has been requested by the current leaders of youth group (YG) and is totally supported by the club. It is a move that completely removes the need for volunteer management and administration and will allow future parents to have more time to enjoy sessions and focus on their child’s sailing. YG Co-ordinator and YG Beach master will all be led by the club instructor team. This amazing change really is happening and it also removes the need for duty man and YG admin!
Parental support is very much still needed and the club’s focus will be on the development of strong on water volunteers. There will be full funding for parent RYA PB2 courses on the proviso that they will fulfill a set number of volunteer duties. Our ‘on water’ volunteer positions are vital to maintain numbers and we know, for some parents, it is very rewarding to be on the water and fully involved.
We are cautious about this big change happening and the parental involvement culture is something we are very keen to preserve. All parents will now be ‘Beach Crew’ and responsible for supporting their kids on and off the water.
Youth Group will continue to be fun social sailing for youths with RYA Stage 3 and will run over three terms on Sunday afternoons, booking one term at a time. The costs for youth group activities will be increasing by £2 per session. Each term will cost £102 or £42 if you have your own boat, and this is to cover the running costs.
An exciting development is the focus on youth racing. Two new activities will start in 2017 to support this:
1) An ‘Intro to Racing’ session will take place on Sunday mornings (not in club race) to learn the basics and gain confidence in getting on the start line and enjoying racing. There are a lot of new skills to learn to be confident when racing and we hope these sessions will equip and get sailors ready on their journey to becoming our future Ben Ainslie’s. These sessions are for those with very little racing experience.
2) Also new for 2017 will be a ‘Youth Race Team Series’, 16 coach supported races over 8 Sundays throughout the year with results and prizes. If you want to join the race team simply book in and turn up on these dates and we will support you on the Sunday race with a briefing and coaching. These dates will be carefully chosen to avoid as many open and traveller events outside of QM, as possible.
In the next pages you can read more detail about the new shape of youth sailing at Queen Mary. We are excited and conscious that these are uncharted waters. With the best plans we will still be learning, listening and growing on our mission to create the best youth support possible.
