Queen Mary Youth Sailing

Welcome to Youth Sailing 2017

There are some new things and exciting changes happening in 2017; let’s start with the biggest change of them all: the club will take leadership of the co-ordination and delivery of Youth Group.

This change has been requested by the current leaders of Youth Group (YG) and is totally supported by the club. It is a move that completely removes the need for administration and volunteer management and 'Dutyman', and will allow YG parents to have more time to enjoy sessions and focus on their child’s sailing. YG Co-ordinator and YG Beach Master will all be led by the club instructor team. This major change really is happening and it also removes the need for dutyman!

Parental support is very much still needed and the club’s focus will be on the development of strong on-water volunteers. There will be full funding for parent RYA PB2 courses with the proviso that participants will fulfil a set number of volunteer duties. Our ‘on-water’ volunteer positions are vital to maintain numbers and we know that, for some parents, it is very rewarding to be on the water and fully involved.

We are approaching this big change carefully, and the parental involvement culture is something we are very keen to preserve. All parents will now be ‘Beach Crew’ and responsible for supporting their kids on and off the water.

Youth Group will continue to be fun social sailing for youth sailors with RYA Stage 3 and will run over three terms on Sunday afternoons, booking one term at a time.  The costs for youth group activities will be increasing by £2 per session. Each term will cost £102, or £42 if you have your own boat; this is to cover the running costs.

For those who want to race we have some exciting developments. Two new activities will start in 2017:

1) An ‘Intro to Racing’ session will take place on Sunday mornings (not as part of the Club Racing) to learn the basics and gain confidence in getting on the start line and enjoying racing. There are a lot of new skills to learn to be confident when racing and we hope these sessions will equip and propel the young sailors on their journey to becoming our future Ben Ainslies. These sessions are for those with very little racing experience or who might have tried Club Racing but want to learn more about it.

2) Also new for 2017 will be a ‘Youth Race Team Series’ of 16 coach-supported Club Races over 8 Sundays throughout the year, with seperate youth results and prizes. If you want to join the race team simply book in and turn up on these dates and we will support you on the Sunday race with a briefing and coaching. These dates will be carefully chosen to avoid, where possible, any clashes with open and traveller events away from QM.

In the next pages you can read more detail about the new shape of youth sailing at Queen Mary. We are excited, but also conscious that these are uncharted waters. We will still be learning, listening and growing on our mission to support our young members as they continue their exciting and fun development on the water at QM
