CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND APPEAL

Queen Mary Sailing Club provides outstanding sailing and windsurfing for the established racer, those new to racing and those who like a more relaxed approach to their leisure.  In addition to activities for our members, our facility is used by local schools.  Our Sailability group provides support for children with special needs and for disabled adults sailing in adapted boats.  The training school enables juniors and adults to start on their sailing career and then join in club social sailing and racing activities.

Our vast elevated area of water provides some of the best inland sailing in the country and we have a vision that its facilities should match our location and be attractive to current and future sailors.  With the club celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022, we are taking this opportunity to launch a Club Development Fund that will accelerate our ability to make the changes we hear our members and visitors would like.

Launching Facilities Improvement Project

The current challenges posed by the steep concrete banks at QMSC have made launching an ongoing obstacle for our members. Our objective is to transform the club's launching facilities to ensure accessibility now and for future generations of sailors.

Project Overview:

Our primary focus is to invest in a new launch ramp-slipway that will significantly improve the speed and ease of launching by reducing the gradient of the current bank. Additionally, we need to invest in a powerful electric winch to facilitate the launching and recovery of rescue boats, as fluctuations in water levels have rendered our current platform hoists redundant at the lowest levels.

Project Details:

After careful assessment of various solutions and gathering feedback from our members, we have devised an affordable and executable plan. This plan includes the construction of a new gentle slope slipway into the West side of the reservoir, with the goal of completing the project before the end of 2025. The estimated cost for the project is £350,000.

Project Team:

The project is being overseen by Michael Pryer, who chairs our Club Improvements Committee. Steve Pears, a project manager, has donated his time and expertise to assist Tony Bishop, our Club Secretary, in liaising with our landlord, Thames Water, and the approved contractors necessary for the construction of the slipway. Rafael Matarazzo, a finance manager from the Dr. Martins Shoe Company, is chairing a newly formed committee dedicated to overseeing the fundraising needed to successfully complete this project.

Fundraising Progress:

Our fundraising efforts began recently, in February 2024, and we are pleased to report that we have already raised £24,000 through outreach to pioneer members. We plan to continue fundraising through crowdfunding, special events, sponsorship opportunities, dinners, and by creating opportunities for both members and the public to contribute. This project represents one of the most significant improvements to the club since the construction of the clubhouse 50 years ago.
