RYA Dinghy Assistant Instructor
Timings
This two day course runs from 09:30 to 17:30/18:00 on both days, but may run later depending upon conditions.
Pre-requisites
Candidates are required to hold at least RYA Seamanship Skills - alternative advanced modules may be accepted only at discretion of the Chief Dinghy. Prospective students must have a recommendation from the Sailing Principal or Chief Dinghy. This can be arranged via an short informal interview - please ask either at the office or email chief.dinghy@queenmary.org.uk
Teaching
The Assistant Instructor is trained to assist qualified instructors to teach beginners up to the standard of the National Sailing Scheme Level 2 and the Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 3.
The award is specific to the centre where the training is delivered.
The course covers demonstration of sailing skills and manoeuvres up to above a Stage 4 standard, with emphasis placed on safe and purposeful boat handling. Throughout the weekend, candidates are assessed dynamically on their sailing ability, enthusiasm and attitude.
Successful candidates will be awarded the Assistant Instructor certificate, and will be invited to complete a one-day induction working with QMSC. Where candidates require more experience or further training, they will be set an Action Plan at the end of the course to either complete more training or shadow some work to fulfil.
What to Bring
We provide wetsuits and buoyancy aids although if you have your own you are welcome to use them. You should bring: swimwear (to wear under wetsuit), shoes you are happy to get wet, a towel, a change of clothes, suntan cream, a hat, and a water bottle
