RYA Safety Boat

What to Expect on the RYA Safety Boat Course

The RYA Safety Boat course is aimed at those who already have powerboat experience and want to learn how to operate a support or rescue boat for clubs, centres, and events. The course is scenario-based and focuses on real-world safety situations.

During the course, you can expect to practise:

  • Operating safely around dinghies and boards, kayaking or canoe rescues
  • Recovering people from the water
  • Towing and assisting disabled craft
  • Shallow water handling and low-speed control
  • Risk assessment and decision-making
  • Working as part of a safety team
  • Theory to include use of VHF, suitability of craft, searches and knowledge of additional rescue situations

Training is practical and interactive, with realistic exercises that reflect the demands of providing safety cover on the water. The course builds confidence in judgement, boat positioning, and communication, ensuring you’re prepared to respond calmly and effectively in busy or challenging conditions.
