Advanced Modules: Stage 4+
All of our courses are taught by RYA qualified instructors in groups with a maximum ratio of 8 students to each instructor. Teaching takes place on the water and in the classroom and we move between the two depending on the group, the weather conditions and the requirements of the curriculum.
There are four options for advanced courses at Queen Mary Sailing Club once you have completed your RYA Stage 4.
Advanced Sailing
At Queen Mary, this course combines the two RYA courses, RYA Seamanship Skills and RYA Sailing with Spinnakers from the advanced skills curriculum. Through Seamanship skill you will see a real improvement in your doublehander helming skills and boat positioning, by focusing on manoeuvres and seamanship decisions. Manoeuvres include sailing backwards, sailing with no rudder or centreboard, anchoring, reefing afloat, recovery of a man overboard and being towed. The Spinnakers syllabus will teach you how to handle a modern asymetric spinnaker, covering power zones and boat speed, balance, and how to hist, gybe and drop a spinnaker.
Cat and Asymmetric Spinnakers
This course will get you out sailing catamarans at high speeds. We will also work on spinnaker sailing. A great course if you love to go fast!
Performance Sailing
At Queen Mary, this course follows the RYA Performance Sailing curriculum and is taught in larger performance dinghies with a helm and one or more crew. The course gives the student the opportunity to be coached and practise their helming and crewing skills and work on a smooth, fluent sailing performance with or without a spinnaker.
