YOUTH SAILING AT QUEEN MARY
Our QM team takes the lead for the co-ordination and delivery of Youth Group but parental support is very much still needed and the club’s focus will be on the development of strong on-water volunteers. There is significantly discounted RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses for parents with the proviso that participants will fulfil a set number of volunteer duties. Our ‘on-water’ volunteer positions are vital to maintain numbers and we know that, for some parents, it is very rewarding to be on the water and fully involved.
YOUTH GROUP AQUA FOXES
Youth Group Aqua Foxes is a fun, social opportunity for those aged 9-15 with RYA Stage 2 or above to get on the water with other young members throughout the main season on Saturday afternoons. We will develop your sailing skills in a fun and social setting, building a strong community of youth sailors and parents. There will of course be lots of games!
YOUTH GROUP SEA BADGERS
The Sunday Youth Group Sea Badgers will keep the same social environment as the Saturday session with more of a focus on development. Each session will focus on a specific skill, with games and exercises based around that skill. By the end of the term you’ll have made new friends and improved your sailing as a result. This course is the perfect way to up your skills before moving onto Youth Group Race.
To get involved with the Sunday Youth Group you must have a RYA stage 3 certificate and be confident sailing and rigging a Topper or Tera.
YOUTH GROUP OSPREYS
Our Youth Group Ospreys sessions take place on Sunday mornings (not as part of the Club Racing) and are designed to help you gain confidence racing around a course. These sessions will introduce some new skills and concepts particular to racing in a relaxed and fun environment, helping build confidence and taking the first steps to propel you onto the podium! These sessions are for those who have not raced or have very little racing experience but are keen to find out more about what goes on around the race course. We do ask that participants hold a RYA Stage 3 certificate or above.
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO RACE- 2021 TBC
-
Youth Race Team is a sequence of Sunday morning races alongside our Club Race. An introduction to Club Race with guidance from the QM Instructor Team.
- ‘Youth Race Series’ is a set of Club Races designed specifically for our youth sailors taking place over 8 Sundays in the school holidays. Following the Club Race course, the Youth Race Series will have its own start, results and prizes, as well as a coach to brief, debrief and support the sailors around the course. These dates will be carefully chosen to avoid, where possible, any clashes with open and traveller events away from QM.
In the next pages you can read more detail about the new shape of youth sailing at Queen Mary. We are excited, but also conscious that these are uncharted waters. We will still be learning, listening and growing on our mission to support our young members as they continue their exciting and fun development on the water at QM
In addition to the above we also have organised School activities and we support the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
