QM Trainee-ships

What is an Trainee-ships?

It is a job with training. It means that you have a job that includes gaining recognised qualifications and essential skills whilst you are working and earning a wage.

At Queen Mary Sailing Club, we offer a Foundation Trainee-ship which means the candidate does require a recognised level of sailing or windsurfing ability but no vocational qualifications are required. We provide the foundation training and experience for a career in Watersports.

How long will it last?

This can depend on the amount of prior sailing experience and the level of qualification we are working towards. There is no end to training and instructor courses in this line of work so no rule of duration.

What will I learn?

There are two different routes available and everyone follows a programme of study that is approved. That means that you could gain an internationally recognised qualification: RYA Dinghy Instructor and/or RYA Windsurf Instructor.

Here is a list of a few qualifications you might gain?

  • Mix of RYA Advanced Adult Sailing and Windsurfing Courses.
  • RYA First Aid
  • RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding
  • RYA Power Boat level 2

  • RYA Dinghy and/or Windsurf Instructor
  • In-House Stand Up Paddleboard Instructor

Throughout your time you will gain the qualifications, skills and experience which match exactly what your employer needs. These are all excellent life experiences to take with you wherever you go.

What do I need to do?

You need to be aged 16 or over, there is no upper age limit.
You have to apply like any other job. This is a great way of getting into work and learning a job from scratch that they are really competitive. You must put together a really good application.

How much will I get paid?

This is a position where investment is going into your training to be able to support us. So the starting wage will be the National Minimum Wage. When you gain experience and new qualifications this pay will be reviewed continually.

There is a national minimum wage for apprentices which varies with your age and details can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage
