RYA Level 1: Start Sailing

The RYA Level 1: Start Sailing course assumes that the student has not sailed before and is normally conducted in Laser Picos. After you have learnt to rig the boat and received an introduction to the boat's controls, the group will take to the water to experience for the first time what it's like to helm a sailing dinghy alone, under the close supervision of the RYA instructor(s).

This is an Adult course for those age 16 and above (Click here for Junior course options).

The courses is run over two day seasons, each day is 9:30 to 17:00. We have full weekend and split weekend options. Our online booking starts at the bottom of this page.

Learn to sail courses

By the end of the course you should have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge, and you will be awarded the RYA Level 1 certificate on successfully completing and understanding the modules of the RYA Level 1 syllabus on the National Sailing Scheme.

All of our courses are taught by RYA qualified Instructors in groups with a maximum ratio of 6 students to each Instructor. Teaching takes place on the water and in the classroom and we move between the two depending on the group, the weather conditions and the requirements of the curriculum.

Looking for a new hobby or activity that will challenge you both mentally and physically? Learning to sail might be just the thing for you! Sailing offers a variety of benefits that extend beyond just having fun on the water. Here are some of the top reasons why you should consider learning to sail:
  • Physical Fitness: Sailing requires a combination of strength, agility, and endurance. As you maneuver the sails and control the boat, you'll be working out your arms, legs, and core muscles. Additionally, you'll be exposed to fresh air and sunlight, which can boost your overall physical health.
  • Mental Stimulation: Sailing also challenges you mentally. You'll need to be able to read the wind and waves, and make quick decisions in changing conditions. This mental stimulation can help improve your cognitive function and decision-making abilities.
  • Stress Relief: Being out on the water can be a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation. The peacefulness of the water and the soothing sounds of the waves can help you unwind and let go of your daily worries.
  • Social Connections: Sailing is often a group activity, and can provide an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Whether you're part of a sailing club or simply enjoy sailing with friends, it's a great way to connect with others who share your passion.
  • Environmental Awareness: Sailing also promotes environmental awareness and conservation. As you become more familiar with the water and the creatures that inhabit it, you'll develop a deeper appreciation for the environment and a desire to protect it.
  • Career Opportunities: Finally, learning to sail can open up a variety of career opportunities. From sailing instructor to commercial fisherman, there are many jobs that require sailing skills and experience.
